ENDOVENOUS LASER ABLATION
This technique has become the gold standard for treatment of large varicose veins which ususally are tributaries of the greater saphenous vein ( link to anatomy/condition page) .
This technique has supplanted the need for surgery in the majority of cases today and is performed in the office setting. This procedure involves the insertion of a very small laser fiber into the vein under sonographic guidance. Once inside, the laser fiber sends out energy that collapses and seals the vein wall.
Healthy veins around the closed vein restore the normal flow of blood. This relieves pressure within the vein and subsequently the leg. As this happens, symptoms from the varicose vein improve. Veins on the surface of the skin that are connected to the treated varicose vein typically collapse as well.
This procedure usually takes 30 minutes and patients can walk out when treatment is completed.
